So, I was working on a post for Facebook this morning, and found myself off on two different tangents, that oddly enough were completely related. Sometimes the realizations I run headlong into amaze me. I mean, it’s not like I was thinking of astrology when I was writing a post about top 10 songs. I mean, that’s not at all related to astrology. But, follow the bouncing ball I call my brain…
So, it begins with a post from a friend that was simply a YouTube video of “Owner of a Lonely Heart” by Yes. I love that song, and in fact it is still on one of my favorite playlists. I wanted to post it to my page, but wanted to elaborate on it. I decided to post the video and also my top 10 songs right now. [Believe me, it changes all the time. Very few remain on a top 10 list forever. Too much good music in the world.]
So, I post my top 10, and then suddenly realize, most of them are political songs. Well, I notice that, and brush it off as, “Well, I’ve always been political” in my extremely casual “it’s not important to life or livingness” way. I mean we live in extremely political times. There’s nothing earth shattering in that discovery.
Then, I’m sharing this little top 10 list with a friend, and she shares her top 10 with me.
She has nothing but romantic songs on her list. Which is fine, and I tell her, “well, that makes sense, your Sun is in the 5th House. Romance, drama, etc.”
And she says to me, “Oh”.
And then it hits me. My Sun is in the 11th house. It’s the house of causes, hopes and wishes, etc..
Now, I know what you’re thinking. You think this is something any decent astrologer would know. And, I’d agree with you. Of course this is what makes me so political. My Sun is in the 11th house and I’m an Aries. I’m adamant about my politics. So, no, this isn’t the “ah ha” moment I’m going on about right now.
The deeper realization is that where the Sun resides in the natal chart can influence more than relative POV or activities. It can influence everything, even down to what music each of us likes. I mean I’ve been political since, well, ever since I can remember. I can remember working in my Representative’s re-election campaign stuffing envelopes when I was 12. I went out door to door with my 9 month old baby during my first Presidential voting election. I’ve sat on election precinct boards, gone to rallies, worked with religious groups to get out the vote, etc. My Sun is definitely in the 11th house.
My friend’s Sun is definitely in the 5th House. She believes in everlasting love, love at first sight, soul-mates, destiny, family, children, remembering holidays, decorating the home for each holiday, etc. She is a romantic. I mean she can drive someone like me crazy, but she has her Sun in the 5th house, and I get it. That’s who she is, just as I am who I am.
But, I never saw the depths of the influences before. Maybe I didn’t want to see it. Maybe I wanted to think we had more control over our lives, and our tastes in music, art, food, people, etc. Maybe I was being far too casual about House positions in general.
In any event, discovering that all the music I revere throughout the decades, is mostly political in nature, shook my world a little today. It made me realize just how influential the House position is.
I’ll admit, I once broke up with a boyfriend when he asked me, “What is a Republican”. He just didn’t know. He was apolitical. I knew it was over in that exact moment. I know that isn’t fair, but I knew it was over. Not because he might be a Republican, but because he had never even thought about it before he met me. He simply didn’t care about politics. Today, I finally understood why I felt that way, and why I broke up with him. It wasn’t fair of me, but at least I now understand why I did it. I have an 11th house Sun placement.
Knowing this doesn’t excuse my narrow mindedness, nor my behavior, but it does help me understand the complicated part the House placement plays in each of our lives. It’s not an excuse, and should never be used that way, but it does peel away some of the complicated layers that inform our POV in life. Because remember, the Sun placement really is our POV. The Sun is who we really are, and the other parts of the chart only inform the Sun.
So, that’s how I got from “Owner of a Lonely heart” to The House placement of the Sun in Astrology. And now, you probably know way too much about how my brain functions.
To end this post, here is my current top 10 [11 really] song playlist [in no particular order btw]:
1. Zombie – The Cranberries
2. Governmentalist – Joss Stone
3. Owner of a Lonely Heart
4. Believer – Imagine Dragons
5. Riders on the Storm – The Doors
6. Work Song – Paul Butterfield Blues Band
7. Motherless Child – Sweetwater
8. Til the Casket Drops – ZZ Ward
9. Nowadays Clancy Can’t Sing – Buffalo Springfield
10. Walls – Kings of leon
11. Put a Woman in Charge – Keb’Mo’
And while not all of them are overtly political, I find almost all of them inspired by politics. But then, I have my Sun in the 11th House.
